Black Willow and Oak
Old Man Willow
Moving away from the familiarity of the picture plane, carving has become a fresh diversion for me. While working with the raw materials of nature, I find the dance of chiseling within the current of the wood’s grain much like the rhythm of painting. I see the two as corresponding expressions.
War and Raven are metaphorical characters that were inspired by a song I had written. They portray the polar roles of provision and destruction. While performing the song at a local folk festival, I had some friends wear the masks with cloaks and dance in front of the stage, when their characters were introduced in the ballad.
